Council adopts new roads and footpaths in Westhill and Skene

As per the attached report presented to Garioch Area Committee yesterday, councillors agreed to approve the addition of roads and pathways to the Statutory List of Public Roads. This means that the roads and paths have been completed to a satisfactory standard by the developer and maintenance will now be the responsibility of Aberdeenshire Council. Residents are advised to check their factoring arrangements with regards to winter maintenance fees etc. Some residents have noticed that grit bins put in place previously by the developer have disappeared. It should be noted that Aberdeenshire Council may not necessarily replace them if the location does not fit with council criteria, for example if there is another grit bin within 100m, if the facility will only be of benefit to a small number of properties or if the facility will obstruct pedestrians, road users or operatives. If you want the council to consider your area’s suitability for a grit bin you should email roads@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

As residents are being expected to be more self-sufficient, I have asked that the criteria for provision of grit bins be reviewed to enable more streets to qualify.

Please note that streets and paths in your area outwith the ones marked on the attached map remain under the responsibility of the developer or factor until such times as they are adopted.

Update on Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route

AWPR

The construction of the AWPR/Balmedie to Tipperty is now underway.

Over the coming weeks and months, the works will become increasingly visible and the outline of the new road will begin to take shape.

Aberdeen Roads Limited is currently undertaking site clearance, site access works and fencing across the 58 km site, as well as constructing the main site office in Stonehaven and section offices in Craibstone and Balmedie. Utility companies are also undertaking works along the route.

The contractor has also taken over the operation and maintenance of the A90 between the Murcar Roundabout and Ellon Roundabout.

To help keep you informed of the project, an e-zine will be distributed later this month. You can subscribe to the e-zine by visiting the AWPR/B-T website at http://www.transportscotland.gov.uk/project/aberdeen-western-peripheral-route-balmedie-tipperty.

Aberdeen Roads Limited will also be publishing its first quarterly newsletter shortly. Hard copies of the newsletter will be available in libraries and on the AWPR/B-T website. We will let you know when the newsletter will be available before it is distributed.

It is also the intention to hold an information evening in May once the main site office is open. More details will be provided on this when they are available.

During construction, it is expected that around 1,500 people will be working on the AWPR/B-T project. This includes over 100 training and vocational places, which will ensure the project is providing opportunities for people to enter the workplace.

Once complete, the new road will improve journey time reliability, reduce congestion, increase safety and provide opportunities for better public transport. Over the next 30 years, it is also expected to generate £6 billion for the north east economy and create more than 14,000 jobs.

Transport Scotland will provide additional updates over the coming months including Council and Community Council Briefings, exhibitions, issue of regular e-zine, flyers issued to residents, quarterly newsletter and website updates. A dedicated project helpline number and email address will also be made available.

Changes to speed limit on A944

Following on from a large amount of emails, phone calls and comments on social media regarding the change of speed limit on the stretch of the A944 Westhill to Kingswells road, please note the following:

  • This decision was made by Aberdeen City Council, campaigned for and voted on by Aberdeen City councillors.
  • I am one of the councillors for Westhill & District (Aberdeenshire Council), NOT Aberdeen City.
  • I uploaded the link to the Aberdeen City consultation last summer here on my website to inform my constituents of Westhill & District that there were changes being proposed. No constituent responded or contacted me at that time.
  • I did not campaign for a reduction in the speed limit nor did I have a say in the decision to reduce it.
  • The contact details for Aberdeen City councillors can be found here: http://committees.aberdeencity.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx

Weather forecast statement

snowplough

Statement from Head of Roads and Landscape Services Philip McKay  “In anticipation of the forecast snow fall and sub-zero temperatures, our roads teams will be undertaking a programme of preventative action.

“Gritters will be out early, from 2pm onwards this afternoon (Wed, Jan 28) and again at 5.30am tomorrow (Thurs, Jan 29), treating all 32 primary routes with salt. Blades will also be fitted as appropriate as we expect a degree of ploughing to be required, particularly on higher routes.

“Gritters will treat footways as required following inspections tomorrow morning.

“Forecasters predict snow fall to be heaviest in west Aberdeenshire with up to 5cm over 200m and 10cm over 400m. Snow fall in eastern coastal areas will be significantly less. Most of the showers will occur this afternoon and during the evening, with further snow predicted for tomorrow morning.

“As always at this time of year, I would ask motorists to drive in accordance with the prevailing road and weather conditions, and to plan their journeys in advance.”
