Recycling and waste arrangements over the festive period

This year Christmas and New Year’s Day both fall on a Tuesday, which means refuse and recycling collections usually done on Tuesday will be made the following Saturday.

This means:
• The collection due on Christmas Day will now be Saturday 29 December 2012.
• The collection due on New Year’s Day will now be Saturday 5 January 2013.

Please remember to put your refuse and recycling out early to ensure it is collected.

All other collections over the festive period will take place on the usual days.

All Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRCs) will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and January 2.

They will open on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 9am to 4pm (which means they close an hour earlier than usual in some cases). Alford and Insch HWRCs will open on Thursday 27 December and Thursday 3 January. Otherwise all will be open as usual.

If we miss your refuse collection, due to severe weather, you can put out extra bags alongside your bin on the next collection day. This is the only time we can accept extra waste.

If we miss your recycling collection, due to severe weather, please take it to a HWRC or recycling point. If this is not convenient, you can put out extra bags with your next recycling collection, keeping only one type of material in each bag, and all glass in the recycling box, for safety reasons.

Don’t forget, when the decorations come down in the new year, you can recycle your Christmas tree, free of charge, at most HWRCs.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Peter Argyle, said: “The festive period can be a very busy time for families and often people generate far more recycling and refuse than at other times of the year.

“The council’s Waste & Recycling Team will be working extremely hard to ensure that refuse and recycling collections are made on time and recycling points are serviced as often as possible. Please bear with us if efforts are hampered due to severe weather.”

Committee vice-chairman, Cllr Alan S Buchan, said: “With so much waste being generated over the festive period, we would encourage everyone to recycle as much as possible – including their Christmas tree.

“If anyone has any questions about what services are available to them, please phone the Wasteline number and speak to someone who can help.”
